Ethics

News

Recent events have drawn attention to business ethics. Here are some basics toward an ethics program:

  • Tell your staff what business ethics are and why they’re important. Spell out the difference between ethical and unethical behavior.

  • Ask people to work in teams to draft guidelines that will help them understand what is and isn’t ethical in your business and that will help them to make ethical choices. The draft document should describe a straightforward communication framework that people can use if they have queries or concerns about what is and isn’t ethical.

  • Distribute the draft document, ask for feedback, then incorporate sensible suggestions into the final draft. Involvement of staff in preparation of the document should increase commitment.

  • Prepare and distribute the final document. Also, brief those people responsible for the communication framework to make sure they know how to handle the issues that are sure to arise.

  • Review the situation on a regular basis, and don’t be afraid to improve ane build on what you’ve achieved so far.
