Communication

Watch Your Hands!

If you want to project an air of confidence and an in-charge attitude, consider these hand gestures:

  • Punch a fist into the air to mean “Let’s get it done!”
  • Use a finger as a pointing rod to emphasize a key point or to direct others.
  • Use open-palm slapping of another’s hand to signify strong agreement or to offer congratulations.
  • Extend both palms in the same motion required for pushing a heavy object to communicate forcefully the message, “I don’t want to hear any more of this.”
  • Extend a thumb upward to indicate strong approval.

How to Use Anecdotes

Telling anecdotes is an effective communication technique, gaining listeners’ attention. Create your own or collect those you hear from others or read in books, magazines and newspapers. To perfect the art of telling them, watch how people on talk shows present anecdotes. Also, watch comedians at comedy clubs and on television. They often use anecdotes as a form of humor.
