1.  Who’s the superpower now, eh?  Which country’s currency, affectionately known as the loonie, achieved one-to-one equality with the U.S. dollar on Sept. 20?

Correct answer: A. Canada. The Canadian dollar, nicknamed for its image of a loon, was worth about 62 cents in 2002.  Now the U.S. dollar has plunged to its lowest level against the loonie in 33 years. 

2. Former Vice President Al Gore shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with what United Nations group?

  1. Bipartisan Elections Board
  2. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
  3. Peacemaking and Preventive Action Committee
  4. Commission for Global Education

Correct answer: B. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  Gore and the IPCC received the prize for spreading awareness of climate change and helping to find ways to combat it.  Gore plans to donate his share of the $1.5 million award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan organization devoted to spreading the word about the global climate crisis.

3. When Kathleen Casey-Kirschling recently signed up to receive Social Security benefits, she made national news.  Why?

  1. She is Vice President Cheney’s sister.
  2. She’ll be one of the first boomers to collect Social Security.
  3. She has never held a job.
  4. She is a Canadian citizen.

Correct answer: B. She’ll be one of the first boomers to collect Social Security Ms. Casey-Kirschling, whom the media has been dubbed the “first baby boomer,” was born a second past the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, 1946.  She leads the way for her fellow 80 million baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964.

4.  Name the Grammy-winning British rock band whose “OK Computer” attitude led them to release its new album “In Rainbows” as a pay-what-you-wish digital download.

Correct answer: D. Radiohead.  The band made its new 10-song album “In Rainbows” available for download without copy restriction and allows fans to decide what amount, if any, to pay. Radiohead plans to release a CD of “In Rainbows” no later than January. (The band released “OK Computer” in 1997.)

5. NBC Universal acquired iVillage last year and has announced plans to purchase the Oxygen cable network in an attempt to attract which demographic?

Correct answer: C. Women. NBC will pay about $925 million for Oxygen Media, which was founded in 2000 by Oprah Winfrey, Oxygen CEO Geraldine Laybourne, and others.
